Kolomyia Museum of Folk Art

The museum was opened in
1926, and it is one of the oldest and most famous museums in Ukraine. The
museum collection includes more than 22,000 exhibits dating from the period of
Trypillya culture until the present day. The exhibits include artistic objects
such as woodwork, ceramics, textile, leather, wool, glass, You can see the
colourful mountain people’s clothes, the Hutsul metallic jewellery, the Opryshky
era weapons, and plates and bottles. The
exhibits located in 18 different halls are valuable and rare works of folk art
from the Hutsul region.
Kolomyia - The Pysanka
(Painted Egg) Town
The painted egg or “pysanka”
is one of the most colourful folk arts.
The central part of the museum is shaped like a painted egg measuring 13 meters
high. The museum has a collection of 6,000 painted eggs, most of which are from
different regions of Ukraine. there are painted eggs from Pakistan, Sri-Lanka,
Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, the USA,Canada, France, and India.
The first chronicled record
about Kolomyia dates back to 1240. In 1405 the town received its Magdeburg Law.
For many centuries Kolomyia has been an important political and cultural centre
of western Ukraine.
Pysanka Museum
The local people have a
saying, “to be like a pysanka”, which means to be clean, beautiful, and tidy.
This embodies Kolomyia. The town centre has a typical Austro-Hungarian housing
system. In general, the town has preserved its ancient appearance. narrow
streets. The Museum of Folk Art of the Hutsul and Pokuttya Region and also the
“Pysanka” museum are the main attractions of the town.
The Museum of the History of
Kolomyia is situated in the building
of the former Dominican Monastery, which was built during the Austro-Hungarian
times. The museum exhibits reveal interesting pages from the history of the
town, namely the life of Kolomyia’s German colonies, development of education,
economy and trade. In addition to the many exhibits, the museum also has a
database about German families living here prior to 1939.
